Cecília Sik-Lányi: A survey of computer literacy among 12- to 14- year-old students

In the second phase of the Hungarian Schoolnet project (a government effort to hook up all secondary schools and 40% of elementary schools to the Internet), provision of content and innovation of methodology seem to be the focal points of development. For the development and implementation of successful ICT methods it is necessary to have appropriate information on students' computer usage, skills and access. The present study analyses the computer usage patterns of 12- to 14-year-old students through interviews as well as using two educational computer games. The usage patterns of boys and girls are explored, skill levels are examined by age, gender and left- vs. right-handedness, and possible strategies for educational software development are discussed.
